The University of Derby’s Cavendish Building is a landmark development designed to support next-generation business education, bringing together teaching, enterprise and social spaces within a striking seven-storey setting.
Working alongside Blueprint Interiors, Johnson Tiles contributed to the delivery of a cohesive interior scheme, where material choices were carefully considered to complement the building’s architectural language and high-traffic environments.
Joining the project mid-construction, Blueprint Interiors led on the specification of key finishes and furniture, working closely with the University to refine the internal palette. With a focus on aligning with existing base elements such as exposed concrete, oak detailing and open ceiling structures, the scheme called for durable, design-led materials that could perform across a variety of spaces while maintaining a consistent visual identity.
Across the ground floor atrium and café areas, our Minerals Pebble (MIN06G) 600x600mm porcelain tiles were specified, covering over 700 square metres. The subtle stone-effect finish introduces a calm, neutral foundation within the large, light-filled atrium, supporting the building’s sense of openness while offering the durability required for high footfall zones. The tiles work seamlessly with the surrounding architectural features, enhancing the overall material palette without overwhelming the space.
Additional areas, including public-facing washrooms and changing facilities, feature complementary wall finishes using Polar White (PURE1A) 300x200mm glazed ceramic tiles. The gloss surface introduces a contemporary contrast, contributing to a consistent and considered approach across shared spaces.

At the heart of the building, the central atrium acts as a focal point for movement and interaction, connecting teaching, social and enterprise spaces. Within this environment, the Minerals range provides a unifying base, its understated texture and tonal quality helping to tie together the varied functions of the building while supporting a professional, contemporary setting. The result is a dynamic and future-focused space that reflects the University’s ambition to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
