Träullit - a new material
This week, we thought we'd profile a family-owned business founded in 1946 in Sweden. Träullit is a functional, natural material composed of wood and cement which bonds together, making it lightweight, ideal floor cladding, one of its traditional uses.
Other Träullit’s key properties include:
Moisture Resistant – Evens out Air Humidity by absorbing moisture from the air or emitting moisture to the ambient air. The material has a high pH value which discourages mould and is not affected by rot.
Heat – The material also stores heat from the ambient air and emits air when the temperature falls. This helps in lowering energy costs and environmental impact.
Acoustic Properties – The open material structure aids in reducing noise levels making it ideal for residential buildings, industrial premises and public spaces.
Träullit has recently collaborated with Form Us With Love to create ‘Hexagon’. Using Traullit Wood wool cement they designed modular hexagon shapes complimenting the practicality of the material, creating a simple but striking product.
The collection is due to expand and will look to include different shapes and colours. The 2011 collection is produced in a range of 8 earthy colours. Bengt Rääf, owner of Träullit commented on the companies new venture:
“We have been doing the same thing for along time and you get a bit stuck in your ways, so it’s really refreshing to see someone taking the material in a new direction.”
Watch out for this material as it is sure to be a hit and we will be trying our best at Material Lab to get some samples!! But for now enjoy these cool pics of the ‘Hexagon’...
