Design Life: Kit Miles

20.07.2015

Fusing vibrant patterns with bold colours, the striking designs by Kit Miles really add a vivid touch to the home. Forming his own studio after graduating with an MA in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art, Miles has been consistently pushing the boundaries to produce exquisite, original wallpapers and fabrics.

Driven to deliver excellent quality and draughtsmanship in each and every design, Miles’ often-surrealist imagery focuses on the freedom to evolve and re-form. His careful hand drawings enable the studio to create an imaginative and dynamic universe, separate from reality.

The studio’s new designs are currently on display for the whole week at Material Lab. And head over to our Instagram account to follow the special @kitmilesstudio takeover. For now, we caught up with the designer, to find out more about his recent work…

What three things can't you be without when designing?

"I can’t be without pencils, paper and a big iMac computer. I draw everything from hand and to scale. I then use sophisticated computer processes to render the final design, translating it into print."

If you had to pick one, what is your favourite material?

"At the moment, I like working with golds and burnished coppers, whether that’s smoky or bright and glimmering. Gold materials have a brilliant radiance and modernity yet are loaded with such history, which is interesting as my work is very much about the deep past and future colliding to make a new. Gold is such an effective tool for storytelling, it packs a punch if used in the right way."

What project that you've been involved with are you most proud of?

"I feel very proud to have worked on the Centre Point Building with Conran + Partners . I can’t reveal any details just yet but it has been a very interesting project."

What project do you wish you'd been involved with?

"I would have loved to have been involved with 432 Park Avenue . It’s a new residential skyscraper in Manhattan and the tallest in the western hemisphere. The building is impossibly narrow and super tall with a very simple grid formation for the windows, giving it a lightness and strength all at the same time."

And what is next on the agenda for you and what upcoming work are you most excited about?

"We have a lot planned for the London Design Festival this September. Firstly we will be showing a special new collection with Tektura at Decorex . Across the other side of London I will be launching a special project at Tent, the details of which I have been sworn to secrecy! We will also be showing a very special new custom furniture piece at Design Junction ."

What's next for you?

"We have just started work on our second collaboration with Osborne and Little , and have a lot of projects with architects lined up for the future. It’s been a great year and 2016 is set to look even brighter."
